Ellisville police officers involved in standoff

ELLISVILLE, Miss. - The Ellisville Police Department was involved in a standoff Thursday evening. Officers received a call of shots fired on Herrington Street in Ellisville.

Police officers mentioned that Anthony Carter walked from his mothers residence to a house he was staying at a few yards away and shot multiple rounds into the air then barricaded himself into the house.

Detective Scott Wuertz said, "It lasted about an hour, a little over an hour, we had the whole area covered trying to get him to come out."

Carter's mother told officials that Carter had access to multiple guns in the house.

Detective Wuertz said he communicated with Carter on the the p.a. system in the patrol car and he did not respond to authorities.

"He would look out the window and that was about as far as it would go" said Detective Wuertz.

Carter demanded to speak with Chief Bruce Russell over the 911 dispatch.

Detective Wuertz added, "Chief Russell while en route heard that he was on the phone with central dispatch via 911, and Chief Russell tried to go to dispatch to talk to him, and he hung up before Chief Russell could try to talk to him on the phone."

Once Chief Russell arrived on the scene he asked Carter to come out and surrender, Carter peacefully surrendered from the house.

Police officers mentioned that Carter had an argument with his girlfriend prior to the standoff.

Carter is facing felon possession of a firearm, disorder conduct, and discharge of a firearm within city limits.

The peaceful standoff was a combined effort with the Jones County Sheriff's Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, and District Attorney's Office.

"It was a tremendous teamwork last night...Jones county works together" said Detective Wuertz.
