Local Hattiesburg resident recognized for saving puppies

HATTIESBURG, Miss - The Humane Society of the United States’ Puppy Mills Campaign presents awards to 14 puppy mill advocates across the country.

A local Hattiesburg resident, Virginia Cheatham, manager at the Hub City Humane Society was one of those recipients receiving the “Advocates We Love” award.

Cheatham was notified of a puppy mill operator that had moved away and left more than 30 dogs behind, she worked hard ensuring those dogs were safe and under the right supervision.

She says, “If it is a puppy mill situation we’re always willing to help and just stop everything that we are doing and that will be our top priority and we want to just help the animals that cannot help themselves.”

Cheatham has opened her home to many puppy mill dogs as a temporary home.

All 30 dogs are under foster care.
